Happy July 4th, everyone! What a perfect day to post about yesterday's brunch experience at Al's Diner, an American diner in the French Concession district of Shanghai. Living in Shanghai, brunch spots are aplenty, with new ones seemingly popping up all the time. Novel, yes. Nice decor, yes. But the actual food? Sometimes you have to use your imagination. But my craving for some solid comfort food this Sunday (...)
I recently discovered my favorite steakhouse had opened its first location in Southern California: Alexander's Steakhouse, in Pasadena! They are known for their Japanese fusion. Yes, you heard right - a Japanese fusion steakhouse. I ended up checking it out one night with a friend, and then a week later, I found myself back there again for my birthday because it was just THAT good.
I love fresh, handmade pasta. The difference is amazing. So I was very much looking forward to my meal at The Factory Kitchen in the Arts District of Downtown LA. The architecture inside is quite impressive, with reclaimed wood tables and an open kitchen meant to make guests feel like they're in a "factory" in direct contact with the food production. We kicked off the meal with the (...)
I spent this New Year's in Bali and it was truly paradise. Not only for the gorgeous beaches and sunsets, the culture, and scootering around with no destination in mind... but of course, for the food adventures! Of all the amazing culinary experiences I enjoyed in Seminyak, from the upscale to the cozy, one (...)
A few weeks ago, I visited Houston, Texas for the first time and I couldn't wait to try some uniquely Texas eats. One of my goals was to try a local fast food joint, so where better than a quick stop at James Coney Island for some hot dogs? Of course, I had (...)
Upon entering Mavi Artisan Chocolates and Gourmet Desserts in Xintiandi, I immediately felt like a kid in a candy shop. The decor was so warm and inviting and yes, I saw chocolates everywhere! You all know by now that Ellen and I have a huge sweet tooth. Mavi was a lovely little space where I could totally see us enjoying afternoon tea. I (...)
If you think you can't have a Turkish getaway in Shanghai, think again. At Garlic, you'll find yourself in a mini Istanbul with great music, ambience, and all. The modern decor and lighting creates a prime date atmosphere. Best of all, and the reason I'm even writing about this place of course, is the food. They have a "Best Lamb You Will Ever Eat" on their menu, (...)
... And it's almost over! Nooooooo. To document what probably will be one of our last hairy crab meals this season, here's last week's dinner at home. You can find good-quality hairy crab at the finest hotels and restaurants, but it's most foodies' opinion that the best way to cook them is in your own kitchen! And it's so easy too. First, untie them (be careful (...)
For Halloween this year, I decided to ditch the knives and try something new. So instead of a pumpkin carving party, I invited everyone over for a pumpkin decorating party! It allows for more creativity and less potential for injury (I've had a few close calls with those carving knives)! First, I gathered supplies from Michael's and Daiso and set everything up on the dining table. Once everyone arrived, we got to work.
