I take my style cues from a lot of places, but you probably never imagined HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones to be one of them. I’ve been a major fan of Daenerys Targaryen’s style since day one, and each season after the next, I look forward to seeing the new dresses that evolve with her character. As many favorites as I have, the blue and gold dress she dons during her stay in Qarth is the most iconic of them all.
That’s why the moment I saw this ZARA Long Dress with Chain Neckline from their AW15 Collection, I knew I was destined to do this post: A modern, wearable version of Khaleesi’s glorious blue dress that until now, you could only find over-the-top cosplay or costume versions of. This dress hits home in simplicity, but the delicate gold chain detail around the neckline makes it rise above all over maxi dresses.
The waistline can be left alone for a casual look, or dressed with a belt for a more dramatically “Khaleesi” look, as I did. I suggest a similar ASOS Skinny Full Metal Waist Belt or Real Leather B-Low The Belt Gina Belt. A gold-plated belt is a must-have accessory in your closet to take your maxi dresses up a notch for the evening. My gold-plated cuff is another staple that I love to use to add instant polish to any outfit.
So where did I find my dragon? A Chinese Zodiac Garden inside the beautiful and quiet Kowloon Walled City Park in Hong Kong. I knew it would be there among the zodiac animals, so in soaring 100-degree temperature, we walked our way through the park, feeling like Khaleesi and her entourage in Season 2 when they trudge through the desert in search of sanctuary. Sounds dramatic, I know. In the end, finding my dragon (and my zodiac animal – guess which?), made it all worth it!
Takeaway: Reign supreme in an airy maxi dress that renders necklaces and earrings absolutely unnecessary.
