Hello Kitty, Hello Dim Sum

I first heard about a new “Hello Kitty dim sum restaurant” from Jennifer, one of my co-workers in the DA’s office, who is without a doubt Hello Kitty’s #1 fan.  Sure, I grew up on Hello Kitty and knew random facts like how Hello Kitty’s boyfriend’s name was Dear Daniel and that she had a twin sister named Mimmy… but never could I pull off strutting into court with a Louis Vuitton Alma-style Hello Kitty monogram print handbag the way Jennifer did.  I knew she was onto something.  So this weekend while I was in Hong Kong, I trekked my way over to my first ever Hello Kitty dim sum experience…

There was an hour-long wait.  Not a problem.  I stared in amazement at this Hello Kitty wine glass cabinet while my hungry  husband deciphered the different types of Hello Kitty-faced buns available.  The His and Hers bathrooms (Hello Kitty vs. Dear Daniel) were a cute distraction.  When we finally got seated, we ordered: custard buns (my childhood favorite), shrimp dumplings, steamed brown-sugar sponge cake a.k.a. “ma lai gao,” and a shrimp & egg-white rice dish with rice molded in the likeness of Hello Kitty’s face.  Everything from the teapot to our plates and chopsticks had Hello Kitty on it.  Even my chair had a signature Hello Kitty bow carved into the backrest.  I admit, I got just as giddy as all the 6 year-olds around me…

OK, so I started playing with my food… But how can you not?

The verdict?  The food was definitely comparable to good dim sum, so it wasn’t just an over-hyped theme restaurant.  I got to eat most of my dim sum basics but hopefully next time, with more friends, I can also order the lotus buns, sticky rice bows and chicken-apple sausage fried rice.  I’m greedy like that.  Before we left, I made sure to peek into the “Apple VIP Room” (That’s right, Hello Kitty loves apples), and was shocked to see Hello Kitty dressed up as the Four Beauties in four different paintings.  Hilarious!  The Four Beauties are four ancient Chinese women deemed to be the most beautiful in all of China’s history, and also known for the great influence they had on history.  I totally got a kick out of the fact that Hello Kitty was now up there with them, or rather, as them.

I appreciated the fact that the restaurant owner strives to use natural, locally-sourced ingredients.  I learned that on my Hello Kitty custard bao, her red bow was colored by beets and her black eyes and whiskers by squid ink.  These are the kinds of details I love to know when I’m eating, especially when my food looks as cute as this!
