“Honey-mee, Honey-you.” Lately, it’s all I’ve been hearing from my foodie friends, so I had some high-flying expectations when I decided to scope out Honeymee this week. And I have to say, it lives up to the hype! I went to their new store on Sawtelle and felt instantly welcomed by the simple cuteness of the decor. Not sure why I had been imagining a ginormous life-size bumble bee at the door or something. The menu was refreshingly simple as well. With just 5 items, it’s a lot easier for those of us who can never decide.
Well, if you can get past the cute names. “Darling” is plain milk ice cream. “Dear” has Ghiradelli chocolate sauce and French sea salt. “Sweetie” is drizzled in raw honey. “Babee” means you get to eat ice cream stuffed in a fresh sweet bun. “Honeymee” gets you a giant glistening chunk of honeycomb on top.
Since it was my first time, I went with the signature “Honeymee.” The ice cream was not as creamy and thick as others, but it made perfect sense given that Honeymee uses fresh milk from a local, family-owned dairy factory and refrains from adding any artificial colors and flavors. The pure milk flavor more than made up for any expectations of texture.
My favorite part was the raw honey drizzled atop the honeycomb, which tasted heavenly intertwined with the milky ice cream. Like the milk, their honey also comes from a local and certified bee farm. It’s a huge plus that this dessert shop prides themselves in only using 100% pure ingredients; my guilty pleasure has just become a lot less guilty. Don’t forget to have some fun eating the honeycomb too, as tackling a ball of wax in your mouth is definitely worth the experience!
The next time I want to take care of my sweet tooth and also reap the health benefits of pure milk and raw honey, I’ll be buzzing my way back to you, Honeymee. With a burning love inside.
