Ellen and I went to Sonoritas Prime Tacos on Sawtelle during my trip to LA. Although we love the down and dirty places like King Taco, we were in the mood to enjoy some gourmet Mexican on the patio. Sonoritas prides itself on quality cuts of steak (cooked in a charcoal grill, no less), along with seasonal and local ingredients made from scratch, including organic corn tortillas. We started with the Chunky Guacamole, which tasted fresh and creamy with ripe avocado chunks.
The Taco Sampler below: BBQ Rib, Carne Asada, Al Pastor and Vegan Taco. I could skip the vegan taco next time; it was just roasted vegetables like bell peppers and squash, whose flavors didn’t really give a zing like the other tacos did.
We ordered pretty much all the tacos on the menu and my favorites were the Rib Eye Taco and Fresh Salmon Taco. The different seasonings and marinated additions on top of each one matched the meat/fish very well.
The presentation here is lovely. The tacos came out on individual wooden slabs. Everything was very clean and carefully presented. The fresh roses on each table as well as the candlelit lighting really set the mood.
For dessert, we had the Red Velvet Churros with ice cream and chocolate hazelnut sauce. Although the taste of red velvet was not as distinct as we imagined, the churros came out warm, fresh-tasting, and visually awesome for any red velvet fan. We’re liking the vibe at Sonoritas; it’s a sweet Mexican addition to Sawtelle with tasty flavors and a moody ambience!
